Our History

Serving the Filer community since 1928.

The Beginning

Filer Rural Fire District was established in 1928, making it one of the longest-serving fire protection organizations in the Magic Valley region of southern Idaho. In its earliest days, the department relied on a dinner bell to alert volunteer firefighters of a fire in the community.

The original fire station was located at 228 Main Street in Filer. A siren was later installed on a 15-foot tower above the station, replacing the dinner bell and extending the reach of fire alarms across the growing community.

Growth and Evolution

Over the decades, Filer Rural Fire District grew alongside the community it serves. From hand-drawn and horse-drawn equipment to modern fire apparatus, the district has continually invested in the tools and training needed to protect lives and property.

The district transitioned from a fully volunteer organization to its current structure, which includes both career and volunteer personnel working together to provide 24/7 coverage across the district.

Emergency Medical Services

Recognizing the growing need for emergency medical services in rural Idaho, the district expanded its mission to include EMS. Today, the EMS division operates a Quick Response Unit (QRU) staffed by trained emergency medical technicians who respond to medical emergencies throughout the district.
